Telehealth Video Counselling

Telehealth counselling involves attending your counselling online via Video communication software (currently TEAMS or WhatsApp).   June offers telehealth sessions on Tuesday and every second Wednesday or Friday.

For video counselling/telehealth to be effective:

  • Reliable broadband WIFI internet connection.   Mobile data drops out and is not recommended.

  • A quiet inside private space where you can speak without interruption or distraction.

  • A device with TEAMS or WhatsApp set-up.

    • A computer/laptop is usually the best device for counselling, as it minimises interruptions from phone calls. Both WhatsApp and Teams work more effectively for counselling on a computer/laptop.

    • Note - phones often overheat when used for 50+ minutes, significantly interrupting sessions.

  • Your camera/video must be on at all times with a clear view of your face.

  • It is important to wear a headset with a microphone, as this ensures that we can hear each other.

  • A minimum of 24 Hours notice  is usually required to change a face-to-face to a telehealth appointment.  A change MAY be possible, provided June feels it is therapeutically appropriate AND she is in a location set-up with telehealth equipment.  She will let you know if it is possible upon request.

Note - June recommends NOT doing counselling sessions in your car, for health and safety reasons.  In particular, it is very unsafe in Summer - both you and your phone may overheat!

Advantages of telehealth counselling:

  • Easier access to therapeutic support for those with difficulties commuting to in-person therapy sessions.

  • Connecting virtually can also lower social anxieties associated with sharing physical spaces with others.

  • Counselling can be done when you are live remotely outside of Sydney.

  • If you have reliable internet access, telehealth counselling gives you relatively quick and easy access to treatment that might not have been readily available to you otherwise.

  • Online access makes it easier to overcome the stigma that has historically been attached to mental health issues

Disadvantages of telehealth counselling:

  • Video counselling comes with the added pressure of you and June relying on an internet connection. One or both of you may lose service, interfering with your ability to connect when desired or needed.

  • The home/work environment can be very distracting with interruptions, phone calls, dogs barking etc.  It can also be less private.

  • Online therapy may not be appropriate for individuals who require close and direct treatment or in-person intervention.

  • It may slow the psychoeducation process.

  • A reduction in non-verbal cues may interfere with the development of a deep understanding of your concerns.

  • It is offered for individual sessions only.  Couples/families can only be seen in person.

Please note that June does not offer telephone counselling or consultations.
